How to Make a Flat Ornament from Your Stitched Piece

This finish turns a stitched piece into a flat, board-mounted ornament with a clean front, finished edges, and a hanger.

What You’ll Need

  • Finished stitching
  • Two pieces of stiff board (mat board, chipboard, etc.)
  • Cotton batting
  • Backing fabric
  • Craft glue (spray or liquid)
  • Cording or trim for the edge
  • Ribbon or cord for a hanger
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Ruler
  • Optional: paper template for shapea

Steps

  1. Decide on your finished size and shape.
  2. Cut two matching pieces of stiff board.
  3. Glue batting to one side of each board and trim flush with the edges.
  4. Center and glue the stitching to one batting-covered board.
  5. Glue the backing fabric to the batting-covered side of the second board.
  6. Attach a hanger loop at the top edge with glue.
  7. Align the front and back pieces and press together, making sure edges match.
  8. Glue trim or cording around the perimeter, working in small sections.
  9. Let dry completely before handling.

Shape Notes

  • Rectangles and squares are the simplest.
  • Circles, ovals, tags, and silhouettes work the same way using a paper template.
  • Always cut the board first, then use it to guide batting and fabric.
  • For tight curves, glue trim slowly and adjust as you go.

Quick Tips

  • Board plus batting gives a stable but lightweight base for hanging.
  • Neatly trimmed fabric edges make the cording sit cleaner.
  • Glue in small sections so the adhesive doesn’t dry before you place trim.
