How to Make a Accent-Fabric Flat Ornament
This variation of the flat ornament uses a decorative fabric back as a visual accent. The structure and construction are the same, with the focus on contrast between front and back.
What You’ll Need
- Finished stitching
- Accent fabric for the back
- Two pieces of stiff board (mat board, chipboard, etc.)
- Cotton batting or interfacing
- Craft glue (spray or liquid)
- Cording or trim for the edge
- Ribbon or cord for a hanger
- Scissors or craft knife
- Ruler
- Optional: paper template for shapes
Steps
- Decide on your finished size and shape.
- Cut two matching pieces of stiff board.
- Glue batting or interfacing to one side of each board and trim flush.
- Center and glue the stitching to one batting-covered board.
- Smooth and glue the accent fabric to the batting-covered side of the second board.
- Attach a hanger loop at the top edge with glue.
- Align the front and back pieces and press together.
- Glue trim or cording around the perimeter in small sections.
- Let dry completely.
Shape Notes
- This method works for rectangles, tags, circles, and custom silhouettes.
- High-contrast accent fabrics stand out more on simple shapes.
- Complex shapes benefit from thinner trim and slower placement.
Quick Tips
- Use accent fabric to add interest without extra layers.
- Board mounting keeps everything flat and sturdy.
- Test trim placement dry before gluing on unusual shapes.
